Dee Alexander

The music began shortly after 8pm with her long standing band of bassist Harrison Bankhead, drummer Leon Joyce, Jr. and pianist Miguel De La Cerna warming up the audience with a nice selection which afforded each ensemble member ample room to stretch on extended solos. As the crowd anxiously awaited the arrival of "Her Majesty," poet Khari B ascended the stage and rendered an opening poem that acutally described and introduced Dee. What a unique way for the entree of Chicago's Rising Star.

Without uttering a spoken word, Dee made her way to the stage and immediately launched into her hour plus set with "Butterfly," one of four selections from this exceptional CD that Dee penned. On this number Dee used her instrument to produced those "scatting" and "chirping" sounds that she has become noted for. Also, both Miguel and Leon distinguished themselves with extended solos.

Throughout the evening, Dee paid homage to those who influenced her career with special mention given to her mother, her first mentor and her musical mentor, the late Chicago Saxophonist "Light" Henry Huff. She always credits him for teaching her to "think outside of the box."

Dianah Washington's "This Bitter Earth" was her next song and she belted out this lovely ballad with emotion, conviction and feeling. It's one of this writer's favorite selections on a CD that's full of great music.

Harrison Bankhead (one of Chicago's most respected bassist) was showcased on "Feeling Good" with a long introductory extended solo that allowed him to use the bow with grace and pick the bass like a flamenco guitar player. It was very well done as Dee finally began singing with only Harrison and Leon on the triangle.

The absolute highlight of the evening was her rendition of "Four Women." This Nina Simone selection is almost always done by Dee and tonight she" brought the house down" and received a well deserved standing ovation.

The most emotional moment of the evening occurred when Dee introduced the mother of "Light" Henry Huff and dedicated his "You and I" to her and several others. It was befitting that she would end this beautiful night of music and celebration with this selection and "Live" from the one person who always kept her grounded and inspired: "Light "Henry Huff.

What a lovely evening that was attended by a "Who's Who" in the Chicago music scene, along with hundreds of admiring Dee Alexander fans. If you have yet to pick up a copy of "Wild is the Wind," do yourself a favor and purchase one immediately. You owe it to yourself.!!!!!!!
